What is exactly "Halloween"?

Scarecrows, jack-o'-lanterns, black cats or witches? What is your favourite costume? Maybe you want to try Frankstein! But what do all of these have to do with Halloween? What EXACTLY is "Halloween"?

The word Halloween or Hallowe'en is a term equivalent to "All Hallows Eve" and, according to some academics, it has got a Christian origin. It began as a holiday to celebrate the vigil of All Hallow's during the Day and the Evening. However, there is one theory that states that many Halloween traditions were influenced by a Celtic harvest festival called Samhain, which is believed to have pagan roots. This theory suggests that Samhain may have been Christianised as All Hallow's Day, along with its eve, by the early Catholic Church.

Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, this festival was taken to North America by immigrants in the 19th century. And then, it has spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century because of the American influence.
